I know I am ready for summer. The sun, the beach, the warm weather, I love all of it. Part of the joy of summer are those summer treats like ice cream. I remember walking to the local ice cream parlor when I was a kid after dinner with my family. The Ice Cream Collection digital scrapbooking kit is my way of remembering those moments.

Wherefore Art Thou?

Jelly Hearts

My Holy Grail of Valentine's Candy

While I can quote Shakespeare, for the record, I am not a big fan of Valentine’s Day. Why should there be one day a year where we go nuts for those we love, with higher prices just because it’s for this arbitrary day? It just doesn’t work for me. The only thing I do love about the day is Valentine’s candy … and I’m not just talking about chocolate. Yes, sure, chocolate is great, but there is something special about all the little red candies that only show up at this time of year … Cinnamon Imperial Hearts, conversation hearts, and the holy grails of them all to me, the Jube Jel and jelly hearts.

Unfortunately for me this year, they are as hard to find as the holy grail. What happened? Could it be that I live in an area that no longer relishes these little gems? Are they no longer being made? Did I miss them in the stores somehow? Wherefore art thou jelly hearts? I can get chocolate anytime. It’s just not Valentine’s Day without them.

Happy New Year! Hard to believe it’s 2011. I hope the holiday season was wonderful for all of you. One of the highlights of ours was Santa bringing an American Girl Doll. I know how happy she is, but what I didn’t expect was how much I would love the doll. It’s like they exude some kind of magical quality that makes you fall in love with them instantly. I find myself wanting one too! So this is how I spent my New Year’s Day.

Since I don’t have a doll of my own, I will have to settle for helping my daughter create her own little doll world. Of course, every doll needs somewhere to sleep each night, so with the help of Grandma’s doll bed, I set out to create bedding worthy of this already beloved doll. I haven’t sewn in quite awhile, but I thought why not give it a go, especially since we had found this super cute fabric on sale in a JoAnn’s store. Amazingly enough, I had the foam for the mattress, thread and piping already so this whole project was under $6!!

I relearned a bunch of sewing things the hard way in this project. What would take a normal sewer a couple hours, took me all day. But, in the end, I think it came out pretty well and the pink, peace sign-loving little girl is thrilled. And really I think that’s all that matters.

If you would like to make bedding of your own, here are a couple resources:
Mattress and bedding (I used this pattern for making the fitted sheet)
Quilt and pillow pattern (for purchase)

I admit it, I love Christmas cards. It is always a joy to get mail from family and friends and see how everyone has grown over the past year. Even as our list gets bigger every year, I still take enjoy sending out these little paper pieces of Christmas spirit. For me, getting that first card in our mailbox truly heralds the holiday season is here. Then, as we receive more, the collection on the mantle grows and you can really feel the love of family and friends near and far.

When I was a kid, everything was done by hand and the process took weeks. My parents would have us draw a seasonal picture and have it made into a simple folded card. Now, with Shutterfly, I can create beautiful cards in a flash and they arrive just as fast. It’s as easy as upload, drag and drop.

In recent years, I’ve made plenty of 4″ x 8″ photo cards. But this year, the selection of 5″ x 7″ Christmas cards at Shutterfly is just amazing. It’s almost too hard to choose. These are a couple of my favorites.

And you don’t have to limit yourself to just cards. Need a personal gift for someone special? Make one at Shutterfly, like a photo book or a calendar. It’s so easy. This is the top half of a calendar I made in no time for a family member about her trip to China. Now she can remember the trip of a lifetime for an entire year.

How about an invite for your next party? We are having a tree trimming party and I thought these were the cutest invites for that event. The little penguin is perfect, since our theme is penguins.

While a Disneyland vacation is very magical, I couldn’t forget all the magic in the wonderful Disney movies. Sometimes I’m not sure who likes watching them more, the kids or me. :) The kids spend lots of time recreating scenes from the movies and of course, there were birthday parties and Halloween costumes. What better way to celebrate those memories on digital scrapbooking pages than using the Magic Movie Collection Biggie. The kit includes elements inspired by many of Disney’s biggest animated hits.
